A Learning Enterprises volunteer will spend mid-June to early August teaching English in a host community in Croatia. Lessons usually last 3 to 5 hours, and students range from elementary to middle school age with varying skill levels. We seek creative, independent, thoughtful individuals who will represent themselves, their countries, and our organization well.

It is important to note that being an LE volunteer does not end in the classroom—a volunteer is a member of the community, of their host family, and of the organization. Volunteers must be constantly respectful, helpful, and open to new experiences. This is a round-the-clock job and requires volunteers' time during pre-departure training in the months leading up to departure, time spent in the program country, and time after programming.

The program will begin with a five-day orientation in Split, the largest city along Croatia's Dalmatian coast. During orientation, volunteers will be introduced to the vibrancy of Eastern European culture and discuss teaching strategies with the Program Directors and other volunteers. While the purpose of orientation remains to ensure that volunteers familiarize themselves with the most effective and appropriate teaching practices, there is ample time to explore this incredible city. Some highlights of orientation in Split include exploring Diocletian's Palace, relaxing on the beautiful beaches, and taking a day trip to the local island of Hvar.

Following orientation, volunteers will depart to their teaching locations, where they will stay for seven weeks. Midway through, the group will gather for a quick weekend trip in the charming Istrian city of Pula. There, they’ll explore the ancient city, visit the iconic Pula Arena—a remarkable Roman amphitheater—enjoy the stunning beaches, and visit nearby places like Rovinj—all while undoubtedly planning their return to this beautiful country. During this midpoint break, volunteers can share stories, exchange teaching tips, and enjoy some well-deserved R&R before embarking on the second half of the adventure.

After seven weeks of teaching, we’ll close out the trip in Šibenik, the oldest Croatian town along the Adriatic coast. Activities will include sharing a Croatian meal and exploring the vibrant city square while soaking in the rich culture of this fascinating destination. Closing ceremony is a memorable moment for reflection on the challenges and successes of the past seven weeks, LE's mission, and the personal growth each volunteer is sure to experience in their own capacity. It is an opportunity to bond again with other volunteers, some of whom may travel together after the program and many of whom will become lifelong friends.

LE is a unique cross-cultural experience. Our programs thrive best (and our mission is best preserved) when our volunteers fully immerse themselves into their program and host community. As such, we require that volunteers participate in their programs as individuals. We understand that volunteers may want friends or family to visit them in their host communities. To preserve LE's mission, your commitment to the program, and mitigate the inconvenience to your host family and community, we highly discourage this.

Requirements

Volunteers need to be 18 years or older upon the start of the program. Experience in the classroom is not necessary, but tremendously helpful.

Overall, an LE volunteer is required to be flexible, hard-working, open to new experiences and cultures, and dedicated to the organization and its ideals.
